Ombre Rice Krispy Skewers

Now that you’ve created your origami heart animals, (did you notice the origami heart also acts as the napkin for the treat?! No coming home with sticky hands!) it’s time to make the ombre Rice Krispy skewers. These Valentine Cards for kids sure are fabulous!

What I love about this recipe, is that it is semi- homemade. Meaning, you don’t have to slave away over a hot pot of sticky mess! Instead, use prepackage Rice Krispy treats!

Directions for Ombre Rice Krispy Skewers

Simply smoosh them into a pan with your hands. (might take a bit of strength so parents need to help with this) Then use a small heart shaped cookie cutter to cute out your design. Each Rice Krispy treat made two small hearts.

Note: Smoosh until you have a half inch thickness, too thin and the skewer will not go through properly.

Next, whip together your favorite royal icing recipe for these yummy Valentine Cards for Kids. My favorite always involves 4 Cups of Powder Sugar, 5 TB of meringue powder, and 8 TB water. Beat on high for 5 minutes. It’s finished when it has a medium flow to it. For the ombre look, separate your icing into three bowls, gradually adding more color to each one. When making pink, red food coloring goes a loooong way! Be cautious add one drop at a time.

Taking one of your skewers, drizzle your royal icing onto each heart. Remember, that each Homemade Valentine Cards for Kids will have three hearts, one of each color. Royal icing will harden within 2 hours.
